A Day Volunteering at The Great Tail Trail

Today was one of those days that reminds you just how vibrant and compassionate our community can be. I had the absolute joy of volunteering for The Great Tail Trail. A unique art trail happening across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. From the moment I put on my volunteer badge, I was swept up in the excitement of it all. Families laughing, kids pointing out their favourite sculptures, couples taking selfies with giant mermaid tails… It was truly magical.

My Role

I was one of the friendly faces helping visitors find their way, answering questions, and sharing the story behind this incredible event. And wow — people were so curious! Most wanted to know how many tails there were (88), who painted them (amazing local artists!), and whether they could see them all in one day (technically, yes — but wear comfy shoes!).

The trail runs from 5 April to 1 June 2025, and it’s completely free. That’s right — a fun, family-friendly adventure through our beautiful coastline, towns, parks, and open spaces, all without spending a penny. But beyond the glitter and colour of these amazing sculptures, there’s something much more meaningful at the heart of it all: Julia’s House.

If you’ve never heard of Julia’s House, it’s a local children’s hospice charity providing extraordinary care to some of Dorset’s most seriously ill children. We’re talking 24/7 care for kids with complex, often rare medical conditions. But what really struck me while volunteering— and what I found myself sharing again and again with curious visitors — is how Julia’s House supports the whole family, not just the child.

At the hospice, children can play, create, and just be kids while trained nurses and therapists look after them. Out in the community or in the family’s own home, support is completely tailored. Whether it’s helping a dad navigate new challenges, taking a sibling out for a breather, or just offering a moment of calm in a hospital room — Julia’s House is there.

And at the end of the trail? These mermaid tails — now beloved works of art — will be auctioned to raise much-needed funds for Julia’s House. It’s a beautiful full-circle moment: art, joy, community… all coming together to support something truly vital.

I feel lucky to have played a small part in it today. If you haven’t walked the trail yet, go! And while you’re out there, maybe take a moment to read about Julia’s House. Trust me, it’ll stay with you.
